The International University College (IUC) is located in the Northeast part of Bulgaria, in the city of Dobrich. It is accommodated in a modern building in the centre of the city, next to the Municipal offices and the Drama Theatre. IUC's location provides easy access to all amenities and furthermore travelling inland or abroad is facilitated given the fact that Dobrich is close to one of the major cities and airports in the country - Varna.

Dobrich - local information

Dobrich is one of the ten biggest cities in Bulgaria and is the administrative centre of the Dobrich district. It is located 35 kilometres from the sea and is close to the largest  Black Sea bay formed between Cape Kaliakra and Cape Galata. The Black Sea resorts Albena, Golden Sands and St. St. Constantine and Elena, the tourist settlements Riviera, Sunny Day and Russalka, and the tourist towns Balchik and Kavarna are located between 35 and 65 kilometres from Dobrich. Varna - the second largest city in Bulgaria known as Bulgaria's Black Sea capital - is only 50 kilometres away from Dobrich.

Among the tourist attractions in the region are the Royal Palace in Balchik (a former residence of Queen Maria of Romania, the Balchik Botanical Garden (featuring a remarkable collection of plant species from all over the world), the Alaja Monastery and the nature and archaeological reserve Kaliakra.

 Climate and nature

The region has a moderate continental climate with a relatively mild and humid winter and a hot - but dry and sunny - summer. The average annual temperature is 12,2º С.

The area is remarkable for its variety of interesting natural and archaeological sites. One of the two main bird migration routes - Via Pontica - passes right above it. Two damp coastal areas of international importance are located here: the Shabla Lake and the Durankulak Lake. These lakes have become the most significant European winter quarters for many waterbird species. The Shabla Lake protected area is also one of the largest habitats of the water lily and the yellow water rose in Bulgaria. The area around Dobrich is notable for its relic steppe areas with exceptionally rich plant life, consisting of just under 400 species, including 40 endangered or endemic ones. Several protected areas are located on the territory of Dobrich district: the nature and archaeological reserve Kaliakra, the nature reserve Baltata (the northernmost longose forest along the Black Sea coast), the coastal areas Bolata and Yajlata, and the Shabla Lake.

The newly built Centre for the Protection of Nature and Animals is an unique establishment in Bulgaria. It is the outcome of a joint Bulgarian-Swiss project. It spreads across a 160 000 square metre area with rich vegetation of trees and bushes. The Centre breeds over 100 animal species - including deers, does, lamas, mouflons, bears, Przewalski's horses, goats, pheasants, buffaloes, waterbirds and exotic birds - in the midst of uncultivated scenery that is as close as possible to the animals' natural environment.

Social life and traditions

Dobrich is an established location for festivals and conferences. Eight national and international festivals are held here, including the European pop music contest "Sarandev", the international youth music festival and contest "Folklore without Frontiers", the international youth music festival "Hopes, Talents, Masters" and the international festival of children's choirs "Zahari Mednikarov".
